small incision is made inside the lower lip, just under the chin. An implant of a desired size is then placed within the chin. Removable sutures are used to close the wound. Occasionally the incision is made within the mouth and will later be closed with stitches. At the end of the procedure the chin is taped up to minimize swelling. The entire procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes.

After the surgery has been performed there may be some swelling and bruising. Pain and discomfort may last for several days, but your doctor will prescribe you medicine to ease the pain. Some facial movements, such as talking and smiling may be difficult for a few days after the surgery.
